Costume Clip

Costume Clip or Costume Change Clip, is a method of clipping through solid objects by abusing the temporary loss of collision from switching costumes. When selecting a costume that you have saved into your popit. Sackboy will lose all collision for 1 single frame, allowing you to more easily clip through walls with enough speed. The technique works in all 3 mainline LBP games; however, it's an incredibly difficult trick to perform, only currently being implemented in a select few IL speedruns.

Costume Clip is a controversial technique due to it's differences between versions, being the most powerful when performed in 1.00, which is not the version full-game runs are currently played on. Playing on 1.00 allows you to spam select a costume much faster compared to other versions, as well as causing the game to slow down due to lag. When done quickly enough, you can temporarily survived being squished by objects which makes it much easier to clip through thicker objects.

Tutorial

Before performing a Costume Clip, you must have a costume with a sticker attached to it saved into your popit. Once you do this a single time, the technique will permanently work on your profile regardless of what costume you are selecting (even if it isn't the specific costume with the sticker). Without doing this, switching your costume will not remove your collision and the trick is impossible.

To make it easier to quickly switch costumes, add the saved costume to your favorites page by hearting it. Selecting the costume from the favorites page will avoid the camera zooming in from opening the costume menu, and prevent you from selecting the wrong item when quickly switching costumes.

If you're performing a costume clip during a full-game LBP1 run, you can save a costume with a sticker during the draw bridge section of First Steps. Place the shoe sticker onto yourself after activating the sticker sensor, then save and heart your costume while waiting for the bridge to be lowered.

In Skulldozer, clipping through the floor and falling to the bottom of the level after the Skulldozer starts makes it move much faster, due to the Skulldozer's speed being tied to how far away from it you are.

In Subway, you can costume clip through floor of electricity instead of jumping onto the moving subway after doing subway skip.

History

Costume clip was first discovered on accident by Timebandit74, where he accidentally clipped through the floor of the ending bounce pad section in Pipe Dreams while derusting off-stream. He would attempt the floor clip on a whim during full-game runs, getting the first recording of a Costume Clip only a week later.

The technique would first be performed in an IL speedrun by Genrist, achieving a world record on Burning Forest. He would also be the first to discover that 1.00 is the optimal version for costume clipping.

In 2021, 5 years before the discovery of costume clipping, Kylometra would upload a clip to the speedrunning discord noting the loss of collision from switching costumes. This would be mistaken for a downward force instead of Sackboy losing collision, and wouldn't be investigated further.
